Review:
It was a great movie. It can be a great film, but it landed me in two main ways. First, two of the three main characters are horrible. Blake Lively makes for good eye candy, but it's just not a good actress. It is not bad in smaller roles (as her part of the city), but it simply can not carry the lead. Unfortunately the film mainly revolves around it (and it says), so its flaws are brought front and center. Every time when you Voice-over into the place, I gathered. It really is not a good choice. Taylor Kitsch is not better. Again ... good eye candy, bad acting. Very bad action. He just is not the soul, and brings absolutely nothing to what character. He must be stupid Fast & Furious movie game against Vin Diesel, not Oliver Stone drama. The second major failure of this film is even more serious, and it's history structure. We never really have the opportunity to understand why the three main characters (Chon, Ben and Ophelia) have such strong feelings for one another. We were told that this is so, but never provided any real reason to believe. It is extremely important, because virtually the entire premise of the movie hanging on their relationship. If you're going to build a dramatic story about unusual tripartite relationship, better explained in more than a quick scene exactly how these relationships occur, otherwise the audience will not know why you should care about the characters. Especially when these entities are symbols Arent very good start. I know I keep asking myself why these two share one girl as they have absolutely zero jealousy, why they never assumed the double-faced one another, and why some of them care so deeply about it - to the point of being ready to risk their lives and engage horrible crimes to save. Where is all the love and loyalty come from? It has never been adequately explained, and the film suffers greatly for it.On slightly positive tone, veteran actors do a good job. Benicio Del Toro was great as deputy chief cartel psychotic John Travolta chews scenery pieces, and Salma Hayek is completely believable in the role, as well. Unfortunately, their competence, serves only to emphasize the incompetence of the younger prospects. Its said that the best scene in the film is between Del Toro and Travolta, with none of the three actors in the lead roles everywhere to be found, and the promise hinted this movie squandered. Many posts have a problem with violence in the film portrays, but did not have a problem with it. Surely I can make a film about Mexican drug cartels, without violence, so I do not feel that it is free. Unfortunately, however, he also did film more believable plot perspective.Overall, I just do not think it is a very good movie. I do not think that Stone felt quite comfortable with what we do here, like trying to be Tarantino moments, but in the absence of despair. And also, I think if this movie was in the hands of Tarantino or Robert Rodriguez, it will probably come out very good, maybe even great.
